Open Question: California gun law & gun licensing questions!?

first off i live in riverside county, california. i am interest in purchasing a hand gun for protecting my home and property. can someone please tell me all the steps i need to do, to do this? do i need a concealed weapon license just to have a handgun, or is that only if i want to carry it on me? i am pretty sure every county has different rules. if i'm understanding correctly, it says just to get a gun license in riv., co. i have to take the concealed weapons course, then make an appt with the police department to show them i can handle a gun? it seems to be saying i need a concealed license even if i dont want to carry it on me? i'm totally lost. do i buy the gun first, or get the licensing first? please someone who has been through this in my area, let me know what to do. also i have been prescribed medication for depression, and have seen a mental health doc as an outpatient appt, about depression, will that stop me? no, im not insane, im a very rational, intelligent person, and no im not interested in suicide, im interested in protecting my home and family! thanks...
